What Is an Electrical Inspection?
An electrical inspection is a thorough, professional evaluation of your home’s electrical system — the service entrance and meter, panel and breakers, wiring, outlets, switches, grounding and bonding, and safety devices — to catch hazards, code violations, and worn components before they become dangerous or expensive.
We flag known fire risks like Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Challenger panels, aluminum branch wiring, knob-and-tube, double-tapped breakers, missing GFCI/AFCI protection, and improper grounding — then explain each finding in a clear, prioritized report.
Inspections are smart before buying or selling a home, for a 4-point insurance inspection on an older home, before a remodel, or after a major storm or lightning strike. Every check is measured against current Florida electrical code (NEC 2020/2023 with Florida amendments).

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about electrical inspections, what’s checked, cost, and reports across Tampa Bay & Southwest Florida.
How much does an electrical inspection cost?
Most home electrical inspections in the Tampa Bay area run roughly $150–$350, depending on the home’s size, age, and inspection depth. You’ll get a clear price up front and a written report.
What does an electrical inspection include?
We check your panel and breakers, wiring and connections, outlets, switches and GFCIs, grounding and bonding, and safety devices — all against current Florida electrical code — then give you a prioritized report.
How long does an inspection take?
Most residential inspections take about 1–2 hours depending on the size and age of the home. We’ll give you an estimated time when you book.
Do I need an inspection when buying a home?
It’s strongly recommended. A general home inspection often doesn’t cover the electrical system in depth — a dedicated electrical inspection reveals hidden hazards and costly issues before you close.
Will you fix problems you find?
We can, but there’s no obligation. We give you an honest, prioritized report and quote any recommended work separately, so you decide what and when.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — Shockwave Electric is a fully licensed and insured Florida electrical contractor (Lic. EC13016151, ES12001958).
What is a 4-point inspection and do I need one?
A 4-point inspection reviews a home’s four major systems — electrical, roof, plumbing, and HVAC. Florida insurers usually require one before writing or renewing a policy on homes 25+ years old. We handle the electrical portion (and can coordinate the rest), documenting panel type, wiring, and safety so your carrier can approve coverage.
Will an inspection help with my home insurance?
Yes. Many Florida carriers — including Citizens and major insurers — require a passing electrical inspection to write or renew a policy on an older home, and can non-renew over unsafe panels or wiring. We inspect to their standard and, if we make the repairs, provide the insurance documentation letter your carrier needs.
Do you check for Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or other unsafe panels?
Yes — and it’s one of the most important checks. Federal Pacific (FPE), Zinsco, Challenger, and Pushmatic panels have a documented history of breakers failing to trip, creating a fire risk. Insurers often won’t cover a home that still has one. If we find one, we’ll explain the risk and your replacement options.
Can you inspect for aluminum or knob-and-tube wiring?
Yes. We test for aluminum branch wiring (common in mid-1960s–1970s homes) and knob-and-tube wiring in older properties. Both are fire and insurance concerns, and both can be remediated — for example with approved copper pigtail connections or a targeted rewire. We’ll document what you have and what it needs.
Do I get a written report with photos?
Yes. You receive a clear written report that lists every finding, rates it by priority (safety, insurance, code, or convenience), and explains it in plain language — with photos of anything significant. If repairs are needed, we include upfront estimates so you know exactly where you stand.
Should I get an inspection after a storm or lightning strike?
Absolutely. Tampa Bay is one of the lightning capitals of the U.S., and a nearby strike or major storm can damage your panel, wiring, and connected devices in ways you can’t see. An inspection after a storm catches hidden damage — and documents it if you need to file an insurance claim.
