What Is Electrical Wiring Installation?
Electrical wiring installation is the running, connecting, and protecting of the electrical cables that carry power throughout your home. It covers new circuits for additions and remodels, replacing old or unsafe wiring (a rewire), and dedicated circuits for appliances, HVAC, hot tubs, pools, and EV chargers.
We install modern copper wiring using code-rated NM (Romex) cable, sized to the circuit — 14-gauge for 15-amp lighting, 12-gauge for 20-amp outlets, and heavier 10-gauge or larger for high-draw appliances — with proper grounding and bonding and GFCI/AFCI protection where code requires.
Older homes with knob-and-tube, cloth-insulated, or aluminum wiring are the most common rewiring candidates — all are fire and insurance risks. Whether it’s a partial rewire or a whole-home rewire, we replace the old wiring safely to current Florida electrical code (NEC / NFPA 70).
Most rewires take a few days depending on the home’s size and access. We work cleanly — minimizing wall openings, protecting your space, and in most cases you can stay in the home during the work — then patch and tidy up when we’re done.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about electrical wiring, rewiring, cost, and safety across Tampa Bay & Southwest Florida.
How much does it cost to rewire a house?
A whole-home rewire in the Tampa Bay area generally runs about $8,000–$20,000+ depending on size, age, and access, while individual new circuits run roughly $150–$500 each. You’ll get a clear, itemized quote after we assess your home.
How do I know if my home needs rewiring?
Common signs include knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, warm outlets, ungrounded two-prong outlets, or a home over 40 years old. We can inspect and tell you honestly.
Is knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring dangerous?
Both can be. They’re associated with higher fire risk and can complicate home insurance. We safely replace or remediate them with modern copper wiring to code.
Will rewiring damage my walls?
We fish wiring through existing walls, attics, and crawlspaces to minimize damage. Some access points may be needed, but we keep disruption low and can coordinate patching.
Do you pull permits for wiring work?
Yes. New wiring and rewiring require permits and inspection in Florida. We handle the permits and complete all work to current electrical code.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — Shockwave Electric is a fully licensed and insured Florida electrical contractor (Lic. EC13016151, ES12001958).
How long does it take to rewire a house?
Most whole-home rewires take a few days — commonly 3 to 5 days for an average home — depending on square footage, the number of circuits, and how accessible the attic and crawlspace are. A partial rewire or a few new circuits is often done in a day.
Do I need to move out while my home is rewired?
Usually not. In most homes you can stay during the rewire — we work room-by-room and only shut power to the area we’re actively working on, then restore it. We’ll tell you each day which parts of the house are affected.
Does a rewire include a new electrical panel?
Often, yes. An older home being rewired frequently needs a panel upgrade and additional circuits to safely handle modern loads. We assess your panel during the estimate and either include it or quote it separately — no surprises.
Will rewiring fix my two-prong (ungrounded) outlets?
Yes. Rewiring adds a proper equipment ground, so we can replace ungrounded two-prong outlets with safe, grounded three-prong (and GFCI/AFCI) outlets throughout the home.
Can you do a partial rewire, or must it be the whole house?
Both. If only certain circuits or one older section are unsafe, a partial rewire may be all you need. If the wiring is knob-and-tube, aluminum, or failing throughout, a whole-home rewire is the safer long-term fix. We assess and recommend honestly.
What kind of wire do you use?
We use modern copper NM (Romex) cable sized to each circuit — 14-gauge for 15-amp circuits, 12-gauge for 20-amp, and heavier for large appliances — with proper grounding. Copper is safer and more reliable than the aluminum branch wiring found in many 1960s–70s homes.
