What Does Outlet & Switch Work Cover?
Outlet and switch installation covers adding, replacing, or upgrading the receptacles and switches throughout your home — new outlets where you need them, GFCI outlets for kitchens, baths, garages, and outdoors, AFCI protection for bedrooms and living areas, child-safe tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles, and USB / USB-C outlets.
On the switch side we install dimmer, smart, timer, and motion/occupancy switches, plus 3-way and 4-way switches that control one light from two or three spots. We also add dedicated 240V and 20-amp appliance circuits and weatherproof (WR) outdoor outlets with in-use covers.
We replace dead, loose, cracked, warm, or ungrounded two-prong outlets with safe, grounded ones, and correct 15-amp vs 20-amp circuit mismatches. Every device is installed to current Florida electrical code (NEC) — GFCI where 210.8 requires it, AFCI per 210.12, and tamper-resistant per 406.12 — so your home stays safe, compliant, and convenient.

OUTLET & SWITCH COST
How Much Does Outlet & Switch Installation Cost?
Most standard outlet or switch replacements in the Tampa Bay area run roughly $50–$125 per device installed. Specialty devices — GFCI, AFCI, USB/USB-C, dimmer, or smart switches — typically run $100–$250 each. A simple like-for-like swap in good wiring can be as low as $50–$75, while jobs involving old or damaged wiring, hard-to-reach boxes, or a new dedicated 240V circuit cost more.
Bundling several devices into one visit lowers the per-device price. These are general Tampa-market estimates — we always give you a clear, upfront quote before any work begins.
What Affects the Cost
- Device type (standard, GFCI, AFCI, smart)
- Age & condition of existing wiring
- New location vs existing box
- Number of devices (bundling saves)
- Indoor vs outdoor / weatherproof
- New dedicated 240V circuit needed

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about outlet and switch installation, GFCI, USB, smart switches, cost, and safety across Tampa Bay & Southwest Florida.
How much does it cost to install an outlet or switch?
Most run roughly $120–$250 per device installed, depending on type (standard, GFCI, USB, smart) and whether new wiring is needed. Installing several at once lowers the per-device price — and you’ll always get a clear quote up front.
What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need one?
A GFCI outlet cuts power instantly if it detects a ground fault, helping prevent shocks. Code requires them in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors, and other wet areas — we install them wherever needed.
Can you install USB or smart outlets and switches?
Yes. We install USB and USB-C outlets, smart outlets, dimmers, and smart switches with app or voice control — a clean, modern upgrade.
Can you replace my old two-prong outlets?
Yes. We replace ungrounded two-prong outlets with safe, grounded three-prong or GFCI outlets, upgrading the wiring where needed so they’re code-compliant.
How long does it take?
Most outlet and switch jobs are quick — often completed the same day. Larger projects with new wiring may take longer, and we’ll tell you up front.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — Shockwave Electric is a fully licensed and insured Florida electrical contractor (Lic. EC13016151, ES12001958).
Which rooms require GFCI outlets by code?
Florida follows the NEC, which requires GFCI protection in kitchens (counter outlets), bathrooms, garages, outdoors, laundry areas, and anywhere within 6 feet of a sink — plus unfinished basements and crawlspaces. If your older home is missing GFCIs in these spots, we bring it up to code.
What's the difference between GFCI and AFCI?
A GFCI protects against shock by cutting power the instant it detects a ground fault — required near water. An AFCI prevents fires by detecting dangerous arcing in the wiring, and code (NEC 210.12) requires it in bedrooms and most living areas. Many modern homes use dual-function outlets that do both.
What are tamper-resistant (TR) outlets — do I need them?
Tamper-resistant (TR) outlets have built-in shutters that block objects — like hairpins or keys — from being inserted, protecting young children. The NEC (406.12) requires them in the living areas of homes, and we install them as standard on new and replacement outlets.
Why is my outlet warm, sparking, or discolored?
A warm, sparking, buzzing, or discolored outlet is a warning sign — usually loose wiring, an overloaded circuit, or a failing device, all of which can lead to a fire. Stop using it and call us; we’ll find the cause and replace the device safely, often the same day.
Can you install outdoor / weatherproof outlets?
Yes. We install weatherproof (WR-rated) outdoor outlets with in-use (“bubble”) covers that keep them protected even while something is plugged in. Per code (NEC 406.9) outdoor receptacles must be GFCI-protected — perfect for patios, pool areas, landscape lighting, and holiday displays.
Do I need a permit to replace outlets or switches?
A straightforward like-for-like swap generally doesn’t require a permit. New circuits, relocating outlets, or adding a dedicated 240V line typically do — and we handle all permitting and inspection for you, so the work is properly documented and to code.
