What Is Recessed Lighting?

Recessed lighting — also called can lights, downlights, or pot lights — sits flush in the ceiling for a clean, modern look that brightens a room without bulky fixtures. Modern installs use energy-efficient LED downlights, available as traditional can fixtures or slim canless (LED disk) lights, in 4-inch and 6-inch sizes.

You can choose the trim to match the job — baffle (glare-reducing), reflector, adjustable gimbal, wall-wash, or eyeball — and the color temperature, from warm 2700K to bright 5000K daylight. We size the lumens for each room, use IC-rated fixtures where they contact insulation, and wire everything to dimmers or smart / WiFi controls if you’d like.

A professional install covers a proper layout and spacing (roughly one light per 4–6 sq ft of ceiling), clean drywall cutouts, safe wiring on the right circuit, and a tidy finish — all to current Florida electrical code (NEC), whether it’s new construction or a retrofit into an existing ceiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about recessed lighting installation, cost, and options across Tampa Bay & Southwest Florida.

How much does recessed lighting cost?

Most recessed lights run roughly $150–$300 each installed, depending on ceiling type, wiring access, and fixtures. Whole-room projects are quoted as a package — and you’ll always get a clear price up front.

It depends on room size and use. Lights are spaced evenly for balanced, glare-free coverage — we design the exact layout and light count for you as part of the quote.

Very. LED downlights use a fraction of the energy of older bulbs, last for years, and run cool — lowering both your power bill and maintenance.

Yes. We install dimmers, smart switches, and app- or voice-controlled lighting, and can set warm or cool color temperatures to match each room.

No. We make clean, precise cutouts and finish neatly. In most finished ceilings we install with minimal disruption and no visible patching.

Yes — Shockwave Electric is a fully licensed and insured Florida electrical contractor (Lic. EC13016151, ES12001958).

Both are great. Canless (LED disk) lights are slim, install well in tight or insulated ceilings, and have the LED built in. Traditional can (housing) fixtures let you swap trims and bulbs over time. We’ll recommend the right one for your ceiling and the look you want.

It’s about the mood. Warm white (2700K–3000K) feels cozy — great for bedrooms and living rooms. Cool / daylight (4000K–5000K) is crisp and bright — ideal for kitchens, baths, and workspaces. Many of our fixtures are color-selectable, so you can dial it in.

Yes. We add recessed lighting to existing, finished ceilings using retrofit fixtures and clean, precise cutouts — in most cases with minimal disruption and no visible patching. If any drywall repair is needed, we’ll tell you up front.

New recessed lighting on a new circuit typically requires a permit and inspection in Florida, while a like-for-like fixture swap usually doesn’t. We handle any required permits and complete all work to current Florida electrical code.

Recessed lights sit flush inside the ceiling for a clean, hidden look and even coverage, while surface-mount fixtures hang below the ceiling. Recessed is ideal for lower ceilings and modern spaces; surface-mount or pendants work when you want a decorative statement.

Most recessed lighting projects are completed in a single day. Timing depends on the number of lights, ceiling access, and whether new circuits are needed — we’ll give you a clear estimate up front.
